I am an independent director, cameraman, editor and colorist born and raised in Colombia. In 2004, whilst filming a series for Animal Planet in Kenya, my heart was captivated forever. Since 2005 I live in Nairobi with my family and travel consistently around Africa and the globe telling unique and exciting stories. I meet each project and its challenges with attention to detail, dedication and excitement.
Though I started making Hi8 videos with my friends at the age of 13th, it took me a while to get into film school. The school was small and badly equiped, but it still meant I had the chance of shooting film, which was the golden standard for us. My friends and I were heavily influenced by the likes of Jena Luke Godard, Jean Junet, David Lynch among many others. Any moment we had to shoot film was a dream come true. I worked and studied in order to finance our little projects, and eventually I bought a Bolex EBM to allow us more freedom in our projects. Still, film stock was prohibitely expensive, and the only lab in the country able to process film in Colombia eventually shut. I then started dreaming of a future where high standards would be possible digitally.
I'm 13 and a friend from school brings his dad's Video8 camera. Wow this is the coolest thing ever! From that moment onward I was borrowing cameras and filming everything. Luckily teachers encouraged us... our senior english project was making a movie! Mr. Tom Romph, the english teacher, would watch movies with us and stop constantly, asking us to think why the camera was there, why the scene was lit in a particular way, why they put that scene before or after something else. I believe I learnt the most with Mr Romph. He taught me to look at movies with a critical eye, and learn from them.
